BAck to school....Again

Sep 13, 2016
We have been back in the swing of things for a few weeks now and it's been going smoother than I anticipated.

This summer was quite crazy and for the first time ever, I was actually a little bit happy for the kids to be back in school.  Miles really wore me down this summer and having him in full day school has been quite refreshing.

We had our annual back to school dinner.

We got home from Bear Lake the day before school started, so I tried to get the kids to do Happy Meals for the back to school dinner.  Shockingly, they refused, and wanted what we always have, brown bag lunches.  Thank goodness I picked something simple from the beginning and didn't copy all those crazy pinterest people.

Macey was all excitement to go back to school, just like always.

She has an amazing teacher and Macey was very happy to find out her new teacher loves Harry Potter just like her.

I cannot believe she is in 4th grade.  Like really, can not believe it.  This should not be happening.

They did some assessments before school started and I was a bit nervous for Miles, remembering how horribly things went last year.  This year was a huge improvement! While I was the only parent that actually had to go in with their first grader instead of waiting in the hall,  he at least spoke and communicated with the teachers and they were as kind and patient as could be.

Miles told me he was only going to go to the first 2 days of school and the last 2 days.  Luckily, he came home loving school and has gone back everyday since.

I'm not saying he goes happily everyday.  It is still a battle most mornings to get the kid fed and ready, but we are getting there and I will not give up.  Homework is another story and another battle that I don't always have the energy to fight. :)

Then there is Crew.

This kid has been dying to go to school  His day finally came and it was all smiles and excitement.  Ruby had to get in on his photo session.

He went into preschool as happy as could be, posed for a picture, and then went and read books with the rest of the kids.  I didn't even know what to do with myself, it was the first time in a long time I wasn't actually needed. I didn't even break a sweat. What a difference from Miles.

The only issue we had at preschool drop off was Ruby thought she should get to ride in Crew's seat, since she's the big kid home with me now. So, after dragging a kicking and screaming Ruby into her seat, I actually was sweating and it felt like a normal school drop off for me. :)

These kids have the most amazing teachers this year and I am so grateful.  You cannot replace a great teacher and I am thankful everyday for these teachers and the time and love they give these kids.

And I am so glad I get this crazy one all to myself for a few more years.

And, I need to report, this was the first year I did not cry sending the kids back to school!  I am getting better at this letting go thing.

Yay, back to school! They are going to have a great year with their wonderful teachers. I love that Macey's favorite color has remained white since she was little.

Schools out for summer

Jun 6, 2016
Miles did it! He made it through kindergarten and did pretty awesome too!

He of course had his moments.  You know where I had to drag him into his classroom kicking and screaming.  But, then the kids would cheer and chant his name, Mrs. Lee would put her arm around him and tempt him with smelly stickers and getting to try a hard book, and I would turn and run out the door while he was distracted.

I do not know what we would of done without Mrs. Lee.  She pushed him, motivated him, left him alone when he needed to be, saw his potential and most importantly, loved this kid deeply.

first day of kindergarten vs last day

She told me he is one of her all time favorites and will never forget him.  I might of shed a tear.  This kid has just been blessed with amazing teachers and we all pray it will continue into 1st grade.  :)

Macey was also blessed with an awesome teacher, who told me she wished she had 20 Macey's in her class.

first day of 3rd grade vs last day

Macey had a pretty rough class this year and would get frustrated by their lack of listening and respect they showed her teacher.  One night she asked me, "Why don't they want to learn? Don't they know how lucky they are to get to go to school?"  :)

Despite her constant frustration with the loudness of her class, she had a great year and it was good for her to learn how to work and deal with kids that were hard for her.

And like always, she still cried on the last day of school, because she is just going to miss all her friends so much. :)

We did our normal end of school stuff.

And met our friends at the park, like we always do.

And I brought cookies and drinks from Sodalicious to celebrate!

We have a lot of kids!

It's crazy to think we've been through 4 school years together!!

We met dropping our kids off for the first day of kindergarten and they both tried to make me feel better about crying.  :)

Can't believe we are done with another school year and how much these 2 have grown.

Glad I get the summer to hang out with them!

Macey is 9. 9!?!

Feb 16, 2016
I cannot believe this girl is 9!!!!

She is one of my most favorite people, ever.

Macey is kind, generous, smart, hard working, and fun loving.

She loves to read, hang out with her friends, play games, dance, sing, and talk.

This birthday was a breeze, since we had been to California the week before.

She couldn't even think of anything she wanted for her birthday.  Luckily, the boys and I know her well, so she was very pleased with the few things we picked out for her.

Palace Pet Legos and little live pets.  Such an easy child to please (sometimes).

Miles, Crew and Ruby are all obsessed with Macey and flip out when they get to spend any time with her.  Miles has a hard time sharing her, but she is good about playing games with Crew and letting Ruby in her room from time to time.  I could not of asked for a better first kid.

Don't be fooled though, this girl is full of attitude too.

This is her telling me I misinterpreted her cake request. :)

We lucked out and there was a BYU game that night.  So, after a gourmet meal of crockpot mac & cheese, strawberries and birthday cake, we were off.

There was only one person she wanted to bring and that was Tajen.

These two have been bff's since their toddler days.

I love their relationship and the sweet and fun sides they bring out in each other. best friends forever.

Macey always breaks out her sweet dance moves during timeouts, but did not appreciate me photographing her.

I love this girl.  I love that she wants to hang out with me.  I love that she wants to be inclusive of everyone.  I love that she wants to be good and helps me to be better.  I love that she is a good friend.  I love that she makes our house a better place.

Still can't believe I have a nine year old!!

You make me want to try harder to have a strong friendship component in my relationships with my kids. Its awesome to see you and Macey taking selfies and it sounds like you're really close. That's so cool.

November

Dec 3, 2015
November can and went way too fast, well most days at least.

Remember when you were a kid and it seemed a lifetime between Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas?  I guess it makes me officially old, time is going by too fast sometimes.

We lucked out and got one perfect leaf jumping day in before the snow hit and it got too cold.

I love it when the kids start to do something fun outside and then the other kids notice and slowly start trickling outdoors to play.

It got even more exciting when Paul joined the fun and made a giant leaf pile that the kids took turns hiding in and scaring people, before they could no longer contain the urge to jump in it.

We got a good hour of leaf jumping in before the metal rakes came out and I deemed it too dangerous for my kids to continue to be outside. :)

The valley got it's first snow dusting.

Which meant Paul got off work early and we went sledding with the Rensinks at our new favorite mountain sledding hill.

Nothing like a first snow.

And it was our first sledding experience, post kids, where someone didn't cry.

It was a sledding miracle, which I don't foresee being repeated.

Miles has decided he wants to be a scientist. Which means he is always doing some sort of experiment.

Whether it be figuring out how to get cars into Ruby's crib.  Or mixing things like mouth wash, toothpaste, and soap together to see what he can create.  Or putting random toys or food items in the freezer to see what happens.

It's been messy and exciting around here to say the least.

I got to experience quite an exciting day this month too.  Nothing terrible happened, just lots of super annoying things.

It started with Crew peeing his pants in the Carl's Jr. playplace and discovering this by the fact that it dripped onto the table where Julianne and I had just placed our drinks.  I then had the walk of shame to go tell the workers what happened.

The "Pee Ball" and the table we were originally sitting at :)

Then when leaving the parking lot I got in an accident, which caused me to be late for kindergarten drop off. After returning home Crew had a poop accident.  In order to get that cleaned up I put Ruby down for a nap.  When she woke up 2 hours later I discovered she had removed her clothing and dirty diaper, and had flung poop all over the room.  I seriously could not stop laughing.  There were a few other things that happened that day, but I think I've already tried to block this day from my memory.  The joys of motherhood.

This was me when I got to sit down for the first time that day at 8:00, it took me another 30 min to convince myself to get back up and tackle the war zone that was my house.

Luckily most of our days and outings are "boring" compared to that.

And I am even willing to attempt to take them swimming without Paul.  The locker room afterwards always attempts to break me down, but we are getting better.

And sometimes I have energy left over at the end of the day to babysit neighbor kids and feed them dinner too.

And then there's this girl.

She of course has her moments, but when I really need her, she's there. Whether it be doing her homework without having to be asked, helping with dinner, cleaning with me after the little kids go to bed, and even seen here typing a talk for church without any assistance from me. bless this helpful and independent 8 year old.

Ruby is still getting into everything and stealing everyone's stuff.

And Crew is always walking around with some sort of injury.

But these 2 are playing together more and more each day.  and I am sad they only have a few more weeks in nursery together before Crew moves up to Sunbeams.

Oh my goodness, worst day ever! I can't believe you were already laughing about it as it happened. I totally would have been crying/yelling/curled up in a comatose ball on my bed. You totally glazed over the car accident part - hopefully that means it wasn't a big deal???

Backpacking

Oct 10, 2015
Paul and Steve took Macey and Ethan on their first overnight backpacking trip up to Silver Lake in American Fork Canyon.

The hike was just over 2 miles in and an elevation gain of 1,450 feet.

Macey was so excited that she was big enough to carry all her own stuff (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, clothes, gear...everything for her). I don't think she was as excited about it half way through the hike, but she did it and I was impressed.

I was a bit, ok a lot, nervous about bears.

So, Paul got bear spray, taught Macey what to do if they saw one, bought a bear can, and made sure to set up their kitchen up away from their tents.  He's a good husband to ease my fears like that. :)

It happened to be the coldest weekend since summer, there was frost everywhere when they woke up, but they both slept totally fine (I would not of slept at all).

Macey gave it 2 thumbs up and said it was just as fun as Disneyland and given the choice between the two she doesn't know which she would choose.

Her favorite part was climbing around on these rocks, which is her own personal heaven.  She of course ripped her pants in the process.

Things Paul wants to remember about their trip:

- unsuccessful fishing, Macey still loved it.

- He told Macey not to go in the water, she did and then was freezing cause her shoes were wet.  She had to wear his socks and still did some pouting about it.

- Macey kept asking "how much longer" the entire hike, but then forgot she was tired once they got there.

- He is still mad that Steve accepted an out of state job offer immediately before their trip.  And because of that they can't make this a tradition, and he now has to find a new (probably not as cool) friend to go backpacking with.

So glad everyone survived and maybe next year I can convince him to take Miles too. :)
